How It Started
Fast search and an even faster turnaround
As a professional organization that helps legal professionals share their knowledge, member-created content is a core feature of the ILTA website. But like many member organizations, ILTA was relying on Higher Logic for its CMS capabilities, and the built-in search function left much to be desired. To ensure that members could find the content they were looking for – whether it was hosted on Higher Logic, YouTube, or Podbean – they turned to Foster Made to modernize their search capabilities. The goal was to showcase the revamped search function to four thousand attendees at ILTA’s annual conference, called ILTACON. The catch was, ILTACON was quickly approaching.
Our Process
A flexible approach for a time-sensitive project
Updating ILTA’s search capabilities presented two core challenges: one, how to modernize the search and discovery experiences on ILTA's website using Algolia while still retaining ILTA's existing CMS and Community Management Platform, Higher Logic; and two, how to do so under a tight timeline. To address the latter, we took an agile approach with multiple design and development workstreams collaboratively iterating toward the project goals.
Overcoming the first obstacle was less straightforward. Higher Logic is a community platform lacking the interoperability features typical in many modern applications. To solve this challenge, we deployed a middle layer using AWS Lambdas that could efficiently retrieve, transform, and aggregate data from multiple data sources, including Higher Logic, YouTube, and Podbean. This layer pipes data into a series of Algolia indexes optimized for speed and accuracy.
Search
From filler to killer
Higher Logic was built specifically for member organizations like ILTA. In ILTA’s case, using it as a CMS made it an integral platform in their stack, but with its dated approach to APIs, it doesn’t always play well with other tools. As ILTA’s content needs expanded over time, they had to use filler content to represent videos and podcasts hosted on YouTube and Podbean. Members had to search and find this filler, and then click on it to be redirected to the actual content.
To rectify this situation, we built a middle layer that communicated with all of ILTA’s content sources so everything could be indexed. We were then able to implement a federated search experience with Algolia, which not only returns accurate results as fast as you can type but also allowed ILTA to include more fine-tuned filters that further improved the search experience.
Member Search
Making it easier for members to connect
ILTA also wanted to improve the way that members could search for each other, but because Higher Logic has a dated approach to APIs, getting access to member data proved trickier than anticipated.
Fortunately, we were able to adapt on the fly and set up a way to get member data from Salesforce, all in time for launch. Now ILTA can provide personalized recommendations for members based on their organization's type and size, job function, and other criteria, all at near-instantaneous speed thanks to Algolia.
Search Analytics
Gaining insight for continual improvement
While building the infrastructure necessary to implement Algolia, we set it up so ILTA could take advantage of Algolia’s analytics features. Analytics give ILTA insight into what their members are searching for, and how easily they’re finding it. With this information, they can continually improve the search process by doing things like creating new content, adjusting ranking factors, or even adjusting results for specific queries.
In addition to the benefits that analytics provide, they also serve as the basis for Algolia's more advanced features, including AI Search, AI Recommend, and Dynamic Re-Ranking.
The End Result
Laying the foundation for further improvement
When the new search capabilities were launched at ILTACON this summer, members were impressed with how much easier it is to find the content they’re looking for. Now, instead of having to dig through irrelevant results to find the one thing they want, members can zero in on the exact piece of content they’re looking for within seconds. With the infrastructure in place to index and search content from Higher Logic, YouTube, and Podbean, the groundwork has been laid for further improvements to the site, including an AI-powered chatbot that can help answer members’ questions.
Client Testimonials
