How it started

A trusted partner since 2014

We’ve been working with Dr. Aaron Cohen-Gadol at the Neurosurgical Atlas since 2014. As his trusted technical partner, we’ve helped keep the Atlas website running smoothly and propelled a number of strategic initiatives. Developing a mobile app was one of them. We set out to design and build a mobile app as a reliable MVP, to make it available in major app stores and provide a stable base for us to make further enhancements over time.

Design

Fresh Look & Feel

When it came to design, we wanted to create a fresh look for the mobile app, but we knew we couldn’t make it look so different from the website that existing users wouldn’t be able to tell they were related. Our approach was to elevate the design while maintaining brand recognition. As a result, we achieved a clean, modern interface for the mobile app that still aligns with the existing Neurosurgical Atlas website.

Development

Interactive & Dynamic

From a development perspective, the native iOS and Android mobile app we built largely draws from the existing website. The app provides access to 1,300 rich content articles from the ExpressionEngine CMS through a content API. We also integrated the existing membership backend system, providing bi-directional membership through the website and mobile app. The mobile app also features touch activated 3D models, which offers a more interactive and dynamic learning experience.

Voice Search

Hands-Free Search

One special feature that the mobile app offers is voice-driven search, which allows surgeons to find content they’re looking for through natural spoken language. The search system we built is powered by Algolia, and we delivered cross-platform speech-to-text results using the Google Speech API.

The end result

Better Serving Sugeons Everywhere

This was another successful project in a series of work we’ve completed for the Neurosurgical Atlas. Having the mobile app available in all major app stores helps the Atlas better serve 25,000+ registered members and expand their audience. Now surgeons and students can access the Atlas’s articles, videos, and images wherever they are from their mobile device.

Client Testimonials

"The team at Foster Made demonstrated their unparalleled expertise and the depth of their capability again via the Atlas App project. They just know how to get things done better than anyone else when there is a lot at stake! This App will advance the techniques of brain surgery for many patients worldwide."
