How it started

Partnership and collaboration.

Working with Workshop Digital on their website redesign felt a little like the experts leading the experts. We often collaborate with Workshop Digital on other client work—drawing from their digital marketing expertise to guide specific projects—so the process of working with them on their own website redesign was a truly collaborative experience for all involved. We were able to pull out all the stops, working closely with their team from kick-off to launch.

Research & discovery

Uncovering user and stakeholder needs.

We kicked things off with a research and discovery process that got to the heart of the work we needed to do. We identified stakeholder goals and priorities, got a clear sense of Workshop’s diverse audience needs, and put all of our findings into a data-driven report. We determined that the new site needed to clearly represent Workshop’s identity, function as a good conduit for regularly published content, focus on distinct audience needs, and ultimately generate leads.

UX strategy

Finding solutions through user testing.

The strategy we developed was largely centered around making recommendations that were informed and validated by testing. We started with sitemap revisions—consolidating pages, simplifying navigation labels, and introducing an industry section. We then moved on to the wireframing process, starting with an in-person content priority workshop to determine key content areas and uncover messaging needs. This set the stage for high-fidelity wireframes, which we tested in a remote, moderated usability study. After all of this, we planned for even more testing along the way, so that the design decisions we made would continue to be backed by real user data.

UI design

Enhancing and expanding the visual identity.

One of the original stakeholder goals was to present a cohesive picture of Workshop Digital, communicating personality, voice, values, and expertise while maintaining focus on their audiences. So we began refining the designs, building out a pattern library, and applying visual elements that reinforce Workshop Digital’s brand, working alongside their in-house designer to refine existing design elements and build out a new icon library. During this phase, all of the pieces came together to create a cohesive digital experience with a clearly human component.

Search and discovery

Providing fast, relevant results.

The site needed a clean and intuitive search and filtering system so that users could navigate through Workshop’s trove of resources, surfacing the content they need. We built an instant search experience with Algolia, providing as-you-type results. The full results page is fast and refinable, allowing users to filter based on content type, service, and industry.

CMS development

Building a seamless publishing experience.

A major pain point for the Workshop team was working with a back-end that was clunky and difficult to manage. Too much time was spent formatting content, making day-to-day tasks cumbersome and limiting. So, we opted to build the new site using Craft CMS, providing a cleaner back-end structure and superior publishing experience for site administrators.

The End Result

A website built for ease and growth.

The outcome was a fresh, modern, and fully-responsive website that clearly represents the Workshop Digital brand, establishes their expertise in the digital marketing industry, and clearly communicates to their large and varied audience.

Client Testimonials

"Working with Foster Made has been an absolute pleasure. They took the time to understand our business and ask the right questions before getting started with design. Shawn and the team were able to make several recommendations which we wouldn’t have considered, that ultimately improved the user experience and netted us a fantastic new web experience."
